Halt O'Carrick is a central figure in John Flanagan's "Ranger's Apprentice" book series. He first appears in *The Ruins of Gorlan* (2004), the series' inaugural book.
Halt is a legendary Ranger in the service of the Kingdom of Araluen. Rangers are skilled scouts, archers, and trackers, known for their stealth and ability to move unseen. They serve as the King's eyes and ears, protecting the kingdom from threats both internal and external.
Halt is initially presented as a mysterious and somewhat intimidating figure. He is chosen to be the apprentice of Will Treaty, an orphan boy initially rejected for formal knight training. Halt becomes Will's mentor, teaching him the skills necessary to become a Ranger and guiding him through the challenges of protecting Araluen.
